We were going to start this review with a rant about the current state of F1, but as anyone who has had the misfortune of watching the world’s ‘premier’ motor sport in the past five-years-or-so will be painfully aware of this, we decided not to waste people’s time. Unfortunately, that has left us at a bit of a loose end as to what to write about in this opening paragraph. That being the case, we suggest moving onto the review proper.

With that minor crisis averted, we can talk about Formula One 06, which is a good thing, because it’s not actually that bad. If you’re one of those people that likes to read the score before the review, then you already know that we actually quite liked it. We’re not even massive fans of F1 either, but Formula One 06 offers an inclusive experience that anyone can enjoy.
Obviously you’re going to have to like racing games to start with, but if you’ve ever been left cold by F1, then this might be the one to get you interested. This is thanks in big part to the driving aids, which range from automatic gear changing to showing the correct driving line. These can all be switched off, of course, so if you’re confident in your driving skills you can go for the fully authentic experience. Even if you start with all the driving aids on, it won’t be long before you start to lower the level of assistance so you can improve your skills.

You won’t be short on races to test your racing abilities in, with all the official teams, drivers and tracks included. You can indulge in a full career mode, working your way up from the lower ranked teams to the big guns, or even play as a lead mechanic, watching the races from the pits. There are quick Grand Prix modes, where you can jump straight into a race or do a full race weekend with practice and qualifying sessions. You can even play multiplayer against PlayStation 2 owners via the Infrastructure Wi-fi mode.
Formula One 06 has it all, and aside from being the best F1 game on the PSP, is one of the handheld’s better racers. It looks good, plays well and conveys a believable sense of realism, despite the various restrictions imposed on it by the system. If you’re looking for a new racing game for the PSP, then Formula One 06 is well worth a punt.
