The PlayStation Network is going to be getting some pretty cool games this year. Among those announced at E3 (Pain, PixelJunk Racers, Blast Factor: Advanced Research, High Velocity Bowling, Everyday Shooter and Go! Sports Ski) it was echochrome that piqued our interest the most.

For a start, look at those graphics! If you ever needed a game to justify the high price you paid for a high-def television then this is it. Okay it’s not exploding with colours, but look at how smooth and clean echochrome is. It’s so minimalist and simple, well it is when you just see it in pictures – once it starts moving then it’s anything but simple.
The object of echochrome is a bit like Lemmings except with one artist’s mannequin instead of hundreds of lemmings, but like Lemmings you don’t control the mannequin – instead you manipulate the level around it to get it to the exit.

Sounds pretty simple, but remember, we told you it wasn’t. As you move the level, you can create new paths by turning the perspective of the level and joining sections together.
Or if there’s a gap in the path, you can turn the level so a pillar covers it up and the mannequin can stroll on. It’s sort of like an ‘if I can’t see it then it’s not there’ scenario. This also works on the black holes that make you fall through the floor and the white spots that bounce you up to higher levels.

Echochrome looks like nothing we’ve ever played before, though it does make us think of Crush on the PSP in terms of mind-bending puzzles. It will be an excellent addition to the PlayStation Network which is becoming the home of quirky puzzle games and excellent remakes of PSone titles.
