‘Challenging’ is one word for it; ‘bloody annoying’ are a couple more. Some people like a challenge but more people don’t want to be bloody annoyed by a sticky cube that explodes.

Cube is not associated with the films but it does have some similarities. In the film people are trapped in a series of booby-trapped cubic rooms, in the game you’re trapped playing a series of levels trying to get your cube to the exit and you feel like a bit of a boob.

The cube itself is sticky, it sticks to the floor all the time and doesn’t let go even when it’s upside down, which means getting it to the exit isn’t a straightforward business. Add more than 13 obstacles to that and you’ve got one infuriating puzzle game. There are fans that blow the cube back, wandering bombs, static bombs, things that shoot, collapsing blocks, blocks that disappear, blocks that yours can sink into, blocks that clone yours so you end up with multiple cubes and, if that’s not enough, there are enemies as well.
If you collect all the keys, navigate past all the traps and enemies, and get through to the end quickly enough you unlock more, oh blimey, music. That’s not really rewarding enough and there’s little satisfaction when you do finish a level, it’s more like relief but that goes away as soon as the next level loads up. You can probably tell we didn’t enjoy playing Cube, we’re not looking forward to the sequel, especially if it’s called Hyper Cube.
