Crush is a puzzle game we actually like, and that’s rare. There is just something about the game’s presentation and flattening device that, although difficult to get your head around, keeps you playing.

Crush reminds us of those antidrug ads from the US. You know, the one where Rachel Leigh Cook is holding a frying pan, and there’s an egg on the counter which she points at before saying: “This is your brain,” followed by, “This is your brain on drugs,” as she smashes the frying pan down on the egg, creating a horrible mess. It’s hypocritical and ignores the dangers of alcohol, cigarettes and coffee, but that’s because they’re taxed drugs and… ahem, wrong magazine.

Anyway, Crush is amazing but makes you feel stupid. Or maybe it just makes us feel stupid because some of us can’t think properly in 3D. And there’s a lot of thinking in 3D and then 2D in Crush that soon made our eyes roll back in our heads as we tried to figure out the route through each level, avoiding the obstacles.
We like Crush, but we’re just a bit rubbish at it. We love the premise for it too, even though it displays our shortcomings. It stars Danny who’s had a hard time of late, so much so that he’s developed insomnia and hospitalised himself. But help is at hand from Dr Reubens and his C.R.U.S.H. (Cognitive Regression Utilising pSychiatric Heuristic) machine which puts Danny under hypnosis and allows him to conquer his low selfesteem by restructuring Danny’s thoughts into a strange 2D/3D world.
In Crush using C.R.U.S.H. Danny can ‘crush’ the 3D level into 2D which enables him to move around and get closer to the exit. So if you see a platform in the distance in 3D you can bring it closer to you by changing the level into 2D. That sounds simple but the levels are so cleverly designed that it’ll take a while before you figure out how to navigate. Add to that the obstacles, switches, difficult-to-collect trophies and jigsaw pieces, and the ever-increasing time limit – which lowers your score when you eventually get out – makes for an incredible puzzler. We find it very difficult but it’s not frustrating because there is a solution to each puzzle, it just takes a while to figure it out.
