The PSP is a perfect format for arcade
racing, as the races are relatively short and
the screen can really handle a huge
amount of colourful detail at high speed.
Yet despite a huge number of launch
racers, there’s nothing with the lazy
enjoyment factor of an arcade go-kart
game in the opening salvo of PSP titles,
with WipEout, MC 3, NFSU: Rivals and Ridge
Racer appealing more to the serious racer.
The closest thing to the tone we’re talking
about would be ATV, which brings together
skid-racing and stunt-jumping in one rather
likeable, mud-drenched package. Climax
has certainly done a good job bringing the
quad experience to the handheld too, with
slick controls and a fair selection of
satisfying stunts to pull off.
It’s no cut-down version of the PS2 game
either (take note EA), as there are dozens of
ATVs to chuck through the dirt, with a fair
amount of customisation to boot.
Multiplayer is also pretty addictive, as the
developer has included a good range of
mini-games as well as races to compete on
across Wi-fi . And while the one-player
game seems a little dissatisfying at first, it
really opens up once you’re skilled enough
to take on the waypoint-led open races
through the desert, for which you can even
design your own waypoints. A great
conversion, and an ideal
casual game for the PSP.
