Will PS4 block used games?
Our friends over at NowGamer have raised some concerns as to whether or not the PlayStation 4 will feature any systems to block the playing of used games. Fergal Gara, Managing Director of PlayStation UK, said that Sony’s stance on second-hand games “isn’t clarified just yet” in an interview with the site.
Earlier quotes from Sony have claimed that PS4 will not block used games in any way, but Gara seemed less sure when the question was put to him:
“Well first of all, we haven’t stated that second-hand games… we haven’t made a statement on the second-hand games question. There was a lot of reaction to a patent that was filed, which is a matter of course for a technology business like us, to file various patents at various times, many of which many never see any application but they are good to have depending on ideas that might be building.”
“So what we’re here to do is offer the best value and the best gaming experience for gamers. The answer to the pre-owned question isn’t clarified just yet and we’re working through that and we’ll announce our position in more detail as and when we can.”
Interesting. You know what we think? Sony are going to wait and let Microsoft make the first move. If MS unveil some anti-second-hand tech, Sony will do the same, but they don’t want to risk being the only company to do so. It will be both consoles or neither, we reckon. Can’t wait to find out!
