Does 50 teams for the price of 570 sound
like a good deal to you? If it doesn’t, then
you don’t need UEFA EURO 2008. If it
does, you also don’t need UEFA EURO
2008, you need professional help.

Yes, that’s right. You heard correctly.
After some very careful deliberation
we’ve decided to support Poland
in this year’s European Football
Championships, and we think everyone else
in England should, too. Apart from the fact
that most English people these days have at
least one Polish friend, Poland are in the same
group as Germany and Croatia, currently
two of England’s biggest football enemies.
Obviously, if you’re Scottish, Welsh or
Northern Irish you’re probably delighted that
England didn’t qualify, but we’re not speaking
to you, so there.

Anyway, while we can just about force
ourselves to take an interest in EURO 2008
by pretending that we’re Polish, it’s going to
take more than that to get us excited about
the UEFA EURO 2008 videogame, which, if
you hadn’t already fi gured it out, is basically
just FIFA 08 with way, way fewer teams. Every
national European team is included so that
you can play through the qualifying stages
in their entirety. However, there are no club
teams and no national teams
from outside Europe.
It’s not that it’s bad. In fact,
it’s actually had a bit of a tweak and a
Polish… no, polish… here and there, so it’s
technically a little better than FIFA 08. It’s
diffi cult to pinpoint specifi c examples, but the
gameplay just feels a touch more fl uid than
FIFA 08, which is, at least, encouraging for the
development of the series. But it’s also more
limited than FIFA 08, being as it’s focused on
just one competition. We’ve no objection to EA
marking the event with an offi cial videogame,
but if it were a special EURO 2008 edition of
FIFA 08 (with everything FIFA 08 has, plus
some extra EURO 2008 content), as opposed
to a separate game with a lot less in it, then it
wouldn’t be such a no-good, rip-off cash-in.

It has EURO 2008 specifi c game modes, and
EURO 2008 specifi c presentation, and EURO
2008 specifi c commentary, but nothing you
couldn’t experience with a copy of FIFA 08 and
a bit of imagination. In a perverse sort of way
we’re almost glad that England didn’t qualify,
as it means signifi cantly reduced sales for a
game that doesn’t really deserve any.
