If you've been reading Play for a long time, then you'll no doubt be familiar with the name and face of Nick Jones, who's been working on the magazine for almost six years. Tuesday this week though was his last ever day on Play. He's not actually leaving in order to become the God Of War – he's taking charge of the NowGamer network, of which this very site is part – but we made ...
Electronic Arts’ CEO John Riccitiello has apparently let slip what Sony’s motion control ‘wand’ is going to be called. Speaking at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference, Riccitiello said, “In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace.”
Sony’s standing by its claim that no official name for the ‘wand’ has been announced, with a statement saying something along ...
It's the first anniversary of the launch of PlayStation Home tomorrow. Yay! And Sony is up for some celebrating to kick start the festive season early. As a way of thanking all of you who have supported the service Sony is giving away a brand new Tree House living space for free as of today. The Winter Wonderland space also launches with all sorts of seasonal treats and a Santa's Grotto for all the good children.
Stranglehold was a flawed title, but one we managed to have some stupid fun with. Basically, you got to play a John Woo film, which made us quite happy indeed. While there has been talk of making the John Woo-directed game sequel starring Chow Yun Fat of a John Woo-directed film starring Chow Yun Fat into a film itself, not directed by John Woo and probably not starring Chow Yun Fat, the... errm... lost our train of thought there.
Anyway, speaking ...
It has been announced that Brütal Legend will be getting some game enhancing DLC this December 17 in the form of the Hammer Of Infinite Fate Pack. It will not only give you some new multiplayer maps to enjoy either online or against the AI, but new features for the single player, new trophies and new outfits for Eddie Riggs.
In his pre-budget report delivered later today, chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, is expected to completely ignore the British games industry’s pleas to be granted similar tax breaks to those afforded to the UK film industry, as well as to games companies in other countries such as Canada and Korea. The report hasn’t happened just yet so strictly speaking, you never know, but newspapers have already been given a run down ...
After much nay-saying and rumour Sega has finally confirmed that its epic underworld adventure, Yakuza 3, will be coming to Europe and North America. The Japanese game is currently being localised with an expected release date of March 2010, which is very close. In the past Sega had gone so far as to den that Yakuza 3 would ever come out in the west, but thankfully that was all lies.
We never realised two things: one, that a group of American sixth graders could make us laugh this much, and two, that most webcomics are evidently drawn and written by said ten-year-olds. Graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier asked her 6th grade after school comics workshop to come up with a comic based on their favourite games, and the results verge on genius. For example, the above piece caused a rather loud cackle from this very desk.
It's good to know that the ...
2K Games has relaunched the official BioShock 2 site and now it’s full. Full of videos, images, information and fancy interactive Flash content. So full in fact that unless you have a decent machine with a fast internet connection, your computer will burst and split and water will spray out everywhere. Then it’ll sink into your desk (or lap) making a big, wet glugging sound. You have been warned.
It would seem that Tomb Raider is not the only franchise looking to branch out from its single-player roots and move into the lucrative world of online multiplayer as EA has been advertising a MP position for Dead Space. In case you weren't aware Dead Space 2 was announced yesterday continuing the journey of Isaac Clarke as he attempts to contain the Necromorph threat.
It's named the Vehicular Stunts Developer Diary, but we've rechristened it 'Yet More Reasons We Want Just Cause 2 Right Now'. It's snappier, for one.
Valdir Raupp, senator for the PMDB party in the Brazilian state of Rondônia has put forward a bill that, if passed, would make it a crime to produce, import or distribute “offensive” videogames. “Offensive” is a bit vague, so here’s exactly what he means by that: “Videogames that affect the customs, traditions of the people, their worship, creeds, religions and symbols.” Hmmm… still pretty vague. He also describes the above as “discriminatory conduct”, which brings us no closer ...
A new job listing from Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics is calling on someone with extensive multiplayer experience, leading to rumours that a new adventure for Lara Croft will include some form of online competitive gameplay. It was already leaked earlier in the year that Tomb Raider is receiving a major overhaul and reboot with its next outing after repeatedly disappointing performances this generation.
No sooner had we reported that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker had a confirmed release date in Japan, we were told of not just a European release date but an American one as well. Isn't life just amazing sometimes?
The US will be getting the game before us lot, with it arriving on shelves on May 25. We don't have to wait long in Europe, mind, with the game dropping May 28 round these parts.
We enjoyed what little we've played of ...
Gearbox Software, developer of first-person looter Borderlands, has just trademarked the name Borderworlds, which sounds like confirmation of a sequel to us. Although in the strict, ‘this game does not exist until we have issued a press release saying it does’ sense, there is still no such thing as Borderworlds, and even if there was, who’s to say it even has anything to do with Borderlands? But that’s quite a silly sense, isn’t it?
John Riccitiello, the CEO of EA, just couldn't be stopped during his interview with Kotaku recently waxing lyrical about Medal Of Honor and then throwing a big shout out to DICE's underrated and under selling Mirror's Edge. With a lot of cost cutting at EA of late and talk of entire franchises being cut loose it was assumed by many that Mirror's Edge 2 would be one of the first for the chop, but Riccitiello has other plans.
