Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time, Or: ‘Childlike Excitement Still Exists’
Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time is being made by a studio that wants to make it. Like, really wants to make it. Huzzah!
Sly Cooper is a series that doesn’t seem to get much recognition, at least not with the people I hold counsel with here in the UK. It registers as a series, people know it exists, but it doesn’t appear to have been played by many.
So I feel some kind of duty to point out that the upcoming Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time is looking more and more like the sort of game to be genuinely excited about. And it’s not just because it features colours other than grey and brown and at no point will anybody talk about ‘close air support’.
Though it is mainly because of that.
Reading snippets that pop up on the game here and there, like this piece on Polygon, just gets me even more pumped for the game. When you learn the studio put together a prototype – an example of what they wanted to create – with no permission, assets or approval from anyone before dropping it on Insomniac’s desk (probably with a Tobias Funke-style “BOO-YAH!”) just… well, it’s brilliant.
It shows Sanzaru is a bunch of fans of the series who really want to make this game, rather than a studio with the licence foisted onto them. It shows there’s actual passion for the licence, rather than some dude playing through half of the first game and going ‘yep, got the idea’. It shows there’s actual passion for once. And I’m a sucker for passion.
So if you haven’t tried it before, give one of the earlier Sly Cooper games a try. They’re on PSN and they’re surprisingly cheap both individually and as a pack of three.
Then, when you realise you love them and they’re great games with a lot of style and heart, you can start getting excited about Sly 4 too. Huzzah!
