Naughty Dog: Put The Gun Down
Why Naughty Dog should focus more on exploring, less on shooting
Uncharted 3 came out late last year, and immediately met with the sort of gushing outpouring of joy that’s usually reserved for the end of global conflicts. Perfect scores, commercial success, game of the year nominations, big money, big prizes, I love it.
Thing is, Uncharted 3 really isn’t that good. It could have been, maybe, if it didn’t dedicate over half of its time to getting something so fundamental so dreadfully wrong.
We’re talking about the shooting, of course. Much has already been said of the aiming problems in the original release of the game, something that Naughty Dog dismissed then, surprise, fixed.
So we won’t go over all that again, especially now it has been patched. Other problems still remain, however, with one in particular that makes Play want to smash its own brains in.
Headshots, on Normal or above, don’t always kill in one shot.
This is, along with unskippable cutscenes and poor checkpointing, is unacceptable.
We know that Uncharted 3 isn’t a ‘realistic’ game: with those athletic skills if Drake really wanted to get his hands on some gold he’d just become a gymnast and win the Olympics every time from here to eternity.
However Drake’s enemies are, for the most part, humans, and for the most part humans don’t like getting shot in the face. It’s just one of those things.
And yes, it is possible to survive being shot in the head/face. We’ve all seen Double Impact, the greatest documentary about being shot in the face and going on to become a gigantic Chinese gangster of our time.
But in Uncharted it’s enough to rip you out of the experience faster than all of those moments when the enemies could easily kill Drake but don’t because they obviously haven’t read this.
Why, Naughty Dog? Why do this? It makes no sense, and is in all honesty a poor attempt to bump difficulty without having to think about it. Uncharted 3 would be a much better game with minimal combat, and we’re hoping that The Last Of Us, which judging by the ludicrous reaction to the trailer is of course is going to be The Greatest Game Ever Made Ever, keeps combat to a minimum, or at least scales difficulty on a level other than ‘your health vs their health’.
Remember GoldenEye, which gave you more objectives as the difficulty climbed? That was 15 years ago.
And don’t get us started on having to press a button to pick up ammo.
