Gran Turismo 5′s Functionality Update 2.0: It’s Already Brilliant
The GT5 2.0 update proves – once again – that Polyphony does things right.
I’ve spouted on about this before, but the Gran Turismo 5 Functionality Update 2.0 really does push it to a whole new level – GT5 shows the way updates should be done.
Sure, it’s taken about five billion patches and you could argue that a lot of functionality should have been in the game from day one, but hush down – I’m defensive of my baby. What’s happened since release is that GT5 has been updated to a monster of a racing game, and all for totally free.
No 59p charges for new cars, no £1.79 for new tracks, no money at all for glorified patches masquerading as ‘DLC’. It’s all been free.
And these aren’t insignificant updates we’re talking about – the Functionality Update 2.0 doesn’t just have a catchy name: it has real, new features. Inside car views available on all standard cars, new NASCAR straight-line-behemoths, the ability to save during endurance races and other additional features. Oh, and shorter loading times.
Some things you would expect from a patch, some things you would expect from £7.99 DLC. But it’s free.
These incremental (free) updates to GT5 have proven over the last year that, while it may have been released a bit early, it wasn’t a ‘fire and forget’ thing by Polyphony Digital. The game will continue to get updates and continue to be refreshed for the foreseeable future, and I for one absolutely love this fact. It’s the way all updates should be done.
But then, I am a sucker for not paying for things.
