Sony Casts Doubt On 3D For Handhelds

After Nintendo announced its follow-up to the DS, the aptly named 3D enabled 3DS, Sony has cast doubt over the viability of 3D on handhelds and insisted it will be concentrating on bringing 3D technology to the PS3 instead. Sony showed off its 3D gaming earlier in the year at CES to much acclaim.

“Our focus on 3D right now is on the console,” Sony America marketing man John Koller told IGN. “There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.”

Nintendo’s 3DS has generated a lot of interest too though, even if people aren’t entirely sure it can sustain an entire platform of games. Sony seems to share that concern. “I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable,” Koller continued. “Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it’s an interesting move but one I’d like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”
