ZeniMax – The next gaming powerhouse?
I’ve been watching with great interest recently how a company who most gamers have never heard of has slowly been buying some of the most interesting creative talent in the games industry. That company is ZeniMax Media and recent reports would suggest that its latest acquisition is a company called Machinegames. This Swedish developer has yet to produce a title, but it’s made up of some of the most exciting creative minds who left Starbreeze last year having made Chronicles Of Riddick and The Darkness.
Last month ZeniMax also put pen to paper on a deal to bring Shinji Mikami’s studio Tango Gameworks under its wing. Tango has been put together over an extended period of time by Mikami while he freelanced on other projects such as the recently released Vanquish and the upcoming Shadows Of The Damned. Its mission statement according to the official website is to, “make a new game experience, something the world has never seen.”
Earlier this year ZeniMax also picked up Arkane Studios who were one of the many teams that helped out in the development of BioShock 2 and had been working on an ambitious online game called The Crossing. Throw in the multi-award winning Bethesda and the industry legends at id Software and you begin to see a stable of development studios under ZeniMax that rivals anything else in the world.
The full force of this new power in the games industry has yet to be fully felt. Up until now it has only really had success with Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls games and the Fallout titles. However, with id’s Rage likely to knock our socks off in the near future, Mikami almost certainly working on something stunning, Bethesda yet to reveal its new project post-Fallout 3 and now Machinegames bringing its new IP through the publisher this is a company you need to keep an eye on.
That’s too much talent and too many great gaming credits, to be ignored. ZeniMax could well end up staking a serious claim for power in the coming years. Keep a close eye on it.
