Your Say - Videogame Sequels

Postby skyward on Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:33 pm

Hey chaps,

Tom here from the mind-expanding http://www.nowgamer.com once again - I'm working on another investigation for PLAY, as above.

What's your take on sequels? Do you look forward to follow ups to your favourite games? Is the industry too reliant on franchises and sequels? What makes a sequel good or lazy? What sequels are you looking forward too this year? Do cliffhanger endings annoy you? Is DLC becoming a way to avoid doing sequels? Have Media Molecule and Quantic Dream got the right idea by refusing to do sequels to their respective games?

Let us know your thoughts, and check out the poll too!

although some of my favourite games are sequels, it is nice to see new ideas, characters and environments.

the best way to do a sequel is to try and keep it familar yet fresh, and with new ideas. is the gaming industry too reliant on franchises? possibly but there are plenty of new games out there, with out the hype that a franchise would get. so most people see the franchise games than the new ip's.

as for Media Molecule and Quantic Dream not doing sequals, firsty it's their choice and no one can change it, unless your M$ of course then sequel seem to get worse... and i digress, secondly your've got to look at as a question for the game it's self "Does it need a sequel?" and "Can we improve on this game?" if you say yes to these then yeah sure make it, but as for LBP and Heavy Rain these are game in the own genre with nothing else to give it competion really.

There isn't a good way.

By the way, how is Killzone 2 all of the above?

I assume it's because it is bigger and better than number 1, been made next gen, and carried on the story of the first?

Continuing the narrative is something I personally enjoy. Whisper it, but I'm not a big MW2 fan, even though I've prestiged twice so far. It doesn't help the storyline is so convoluted and full of nonsense. Opposite end of the spectrum - Uncharted 2. A genuinely fun storyline, you feel for the characters and once you've completed it, you just want more. Ideally it'd be all 3 options, but it doesn't happen often. GTA4, you look at that and think it ticks all the boxes, but again it's a completely new storyline with a new cast of characters. Killzone 2 doesn't fill all the options, you don't see the other characters in the game apart from Templar, and it's not as if the original was so dated graphically. It was only a PS2 game, not a Megadrive game.

MW2 needed a better storyline.

I like it when designers listen to there audience and improve there games by that

I chose 'Giving older titles the current-gen treatment (ie SFIV)' purely because there are so many great games on the PS2 & PS1 that have been over looked Alundra, sure most people here have played it. but when i talk to my mates about it, they think am a nutter or something. Zelda type game on PS1 etc.

PSP gets unfair criticism
I was asked very nicely to come back to the forum because of new people, yet I see no newbies, I am basically talking to the same people about the same censored in every topic.

Option 2.

If all you're going to do is make new levels of exactly the same game you might as well just release it as DLC, so that ruled the first option out.

Option 3 was a no because I get a feeling of nostalgia when I go back and play old games on old consoles, I much prefer that to a version with shinier graphics and waggle controls.

Option 4........Killzone 2 was balls, just like Killzone was, so I think it was the "i.e" game choice that put me off. Go play Killzone Liberation if you want a decent Killzone game.

I thought Killzone 2 was great, but most of my friends didn't like it, must be a love or hate game.

mmm

I agree with akuma when he says that option 1 should be substituted for DLC - it saves us one hell of a lot of money.

Like every sports game released. A lot of effort goes into the animations and that, sure, but the kits can just be DLC. Same for the Euro games and incoming World Cup 2010 game, we don't need another piece of plastic resting on the floor.
