Ten Of The Worst... PlayStation Covers

Peter Beardsley, an Oxford professor in Bermuda shorts and a mutilated Val Kilmer: even that trifecta of terror is prettier than this selection of monstrous cover art

CHEGGARS
PARTY QUIZ

Human joke Keith Chegwin climbed into a bath for this cover, which also contains a weird, inter-dimensional portrait of the naked lunatic. We actually played this game for about ten minutes, before realising that it cost about £6.50 to develop.

GIRL ZONE
For the abominable cover of Girl Zone, there are two floating girl heads hanging above a flower patch, while the game’s logo is wearing a hat. It’s the strange product of burying Polly Pocket in some soil, before watering her each day until something evil grows.

IMPOSSIBLE MISSION
It might look like Sam Fisher, but the simpleton on this cover is probably a bricklayer from Essex, with the title of “builder Jim”. Aside from the image being a vicious crime against humanity, the font looks like it was borrowed off some combat trousers from 1998.

MR BEAN
Rowan Atkinson eyes the animated version of himself with sexual interest; maybe they get it on in unreleased version. Either way, this image guarantees that Mr Bean will never enter your PS2 collection, regardless of how hilarious the capering may be.

MOTORSIEGE: WARRIORS OF PRIMETIME
We’re not sure what the ‘Primetime’ thing refers to (Coronation Street?), but it likely has little to do with this cover, which must have been created in MS Paint. Kudos for the enigmatically wrinkly man, but points are lost for his lack of purpose.

VCL PRESENTS:
MOTOR MAYHEM

This aesthetic offence was, sadly, a very good reason to give up on the PS2 forever. What happened to the designer of this is anyone’s guess, but we’re hopeful that he/she lost a few limbs in a wharf-associated boating incident.

BACKYARD WRESTLING 2
This cover goes out of its way to avoid commercial success. The addition of three freaks seals its failure, but it’s the baseball-bat-wielding idiot on the right that warrants the most back story: was he born in a circus tent?

THE ORANGE BOX
Packaging one of the best FPS games of all time in a Job Centre leaflet is a confusing gesture from Electronic Arts. Gordon Freeman is a fugly git, while the Portal man resembles the little symbol in public toilets. Half of the box art isn’t even anything!

PDC CHAMPIONSHIP DARTS
Fat men playing darts: a lesson in how not to show off a game. One of the fat men having a floppy arm: a lesson in how to showcase a Victorian circus freak. In every way, this is the most anti-commercial box cover in PlayStation existence.

ALIEN SYNDROME
This hideous beast reminds us of untalented Nineties mogul Rob Liefeld, who gained infamy for his rubbish comics. The game was always going to stink (that was a given), but did they have to rub acid into the wound by covering it with such shit artwork?
