It’s time to face the facts, dear readers, 2007 wasn’t a great year for the PS3. It’s true, the console sold better in its first six months than the PS2 did, but no matter how much sugar Sony pours over its sales figures, this year belonged to Microsoft. The Xbox 360 had been around for 14 months before the PS3 launched, had a bumper package of games already out for it, and a big enough user base to entice third-party developers into its embrace. When the PS3 launched in March, the 360 was waiting right outside Sony’s house, ready to give its fledging console a good kicking as soon as it stepped out of the door.

But 2008 will be different. Sony has got its act together and toned down the arrogant posturing that angered so many gamers during E3 2006. But most importantly, Sony has finally caved into the demands of consumers and developers the world over and drastically cut the PS3’s price. After the release of the £299 PS3, console sales received a massive boost. In the UK the PS3 shifted around 12,000 week on week throughout October, beating the 360, on average, by 2,000 units, and in the rest of Europe the PS3 outsold the 360 by a massive two to one throughout October.

However, there will be more to the PS3’s dominance in 2008 than just price cuts. As the user base for the PS3 expands, developing PS3 games becomes a more profitable enterprise for third-party publishers, which means more games will get released for the console. Let’s face it, the 360 blew its load a bit early, triple-A titles such as BioShock, Mass Effect and Halo 3 have come and gone, and 360 owners have few exclusives to look forward to next year. PS3 owners, on the other hand, have Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid Online, LittleBigPlanet, Unreal Tournament III and Gran Turismo 5, to get excited about.

2008 will also see the introduction of Play TV, a service that is totally unique to the PS3, and, of course, the long-awaited launch of Sony’s online social club, Home. The other major factor in the battle between the 360 and the PS3, will be the tussle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. As you well know, Sony has had a hole burnt in its wallet incorporating Blu-ray players in to the PS3, and Microsoft has thrown oodles of cash behind Toshiba’s HD-DVD, in an effort to scupper Sony’s plans. Both companies know that the success of their consoles is intimately linked with the success of the formats they support. Since we last covered the Bluray/ HD-DVD war in Play 157, Blu-ray has been making steady gains. Warner recently revealed that the film 300 sold twice as many copies on Blu-ray as it did on HD-DVD. Of course, Microsoft isn’t going to take all this lying down, evidenced by the $300 million it shelled out for the allegiance of Paramount Studios, but most analysts now agree that HD-DVD’s success is starting to look doubtful.

Play is confident that 2008 will be the year Sony gets its groove back. The storm of late 360 ports, dodgy frame rates, over-hyped games, and high prices, has been weathered. Finally, PS3 owners will be able to sail unimpeded to gaming bliss. Still not convinced? Check out the following top ten reasons to own a PS3 next year.

Ten reasons why 2008 is the year of the PS3 and not the 360...

LITTLEBIGPLANET
APPARENTLY SONY HAD to give LittleBigPlanet’s developer, Media Molecule, a kick up the backside, after it discovered the studio wasn’t working as hard as it should have been. But you can’t rush geniuses, just give them all the alcohol they need and let them get on with it. LittleBigPlanet won our hearts from the very first trailer, and, unlike Lair and Heavenly Sword, we’re confident the quirky platformer will live up to its hype.

HOME
HOW ANGRY WERE we after Home got delayed? Angry enough to cry ourselves to sleep in a toilet. Anyway, Home should be with us in spring 2008 and the anticipation is killing us. With customised houses, virtual theatres, trophy rooms and seamless movement into multiplayer, Home is set to make online gaming even more accessible and is taking the fight right to Xbox Live’s door.

BLU-RAY PLAYER
HIGH-DEFINITION MOVIE sales are steadily increasing with each month, and it won’t be too long before DVD’s shelf space begins to dwindle. Although the battle between Microsoftbacked HD-DVD and Blu-ray is not over, it seems that Sony’s technology is going to emerge victorious, and the PS3 will be there to reap the rewards.

METAL GEAR SOLID 4
OKAY, SO METAL Gear Solid 4 will probably get a release on the 360 at some point, but that hasn’t yet been officially confirmed by Konami, so we expect it will stay PS3 exclusive for at least a year. There’s not much we can say to hype MGS 4 any further, you all know it’s going to be an absolute peach of a game, plus it features monkeys and porn magazines, how can it fail to be brilliant?

PLAYTV
LAUNCHING IN EARLY 2008, Play TV will come with a digitaltuner, allowing you to record all your favourite TV shows on to the hard drive in high definition. Sony hasn’t said exactly what channels will be made available with Play TV, but we assume all the Freeview stuff will be there. Games, music, Blu-ray films, and television – the PS3 is soon to become a true entertainment hub.

GRAN TURISMO 5
GRAN TURISMO 5 should finally see Polyphony dive back into the battle of the racing-sims, and give Forza a big bloody nose. We’re really excited about GT5’s compatibility with Home, which should allow you to seamlessly move from the online environment into a multiplayer race. Even better, Polyphony has hinted that car damage is still on the cards.

PSP CONNECTIVITY
SO FAR, PSP/PS3 connectivity has been a bit of a wasted opportunity, but with the launch of Play TV next year you’ll be able to record any TV show and then stream it across the internet onto the PSP. You’ll never have to miss an episode of My Family ever again. And with the PSP’s video-out port, you can watch video recorded on your PS3, on another TV, in a completely different country.

DUALSHOCK 3
FINALLY THE PS3 is getting rumble. Sure, this is a long overdue feature, and should have been present and correct at the PS3’s launch, but at least it will put an end to all the teasing from camp 360. The DualShock 3 will be out around spring 2008, though you could import one from Japan, as they should be out over there by the time you read this.

MMOs
SONY’S EXCLUSIVE DEAL with MMO specialist NCsoft should make the PS3 the console of choice when it comes to MMOs (massively multiplayer online games). NCsoft is responsible for the biggest MMO ever, Lineage, as well as the brilliant Guild Wars, and we can’t wait to see what it has in store for PS3 owners.

IT CAN'T GET ANY WORSE
WELL IT CAN’T, can it? Sony has created a brilliant console, but it’s also made some terrible blunders. Who remembers the whole “you’ll have to work harder to buy a PS3” rubbish that Ken Kutaragi spouted at last year’s E3? Sony seems more humble going into 2008, and the strong performance of the Wii and 360 has made the company realise that it cannot take its fans for granted.
