Konami has released a number of new screenshots for its upcoming PSP sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. In case you didn't know, the game is set in Costa Rica during the Seventies, and follows Big Boss (Naked Snake from MGS3) and tells the story of the founding of Outer Heaven. …along with its Lust, Gluttony, Wrath and the other five circles of Hell you'll play through in EA Redwood Shores' Dante's Inferno. Play spoke to the game's producer, Jonathan Knight, about how happy he is to be going through Hell at work. Play: Dead Space was the biggest ‘dark horse’ of last year. Is EA Redwood Shores hoping for a similar reception for Dante’s Inferno? Jonathan Knight: I certainly would be pleased as punch with the kind of critical reception that Dead Space has gotten. Obviously, it’s an extremely high quality game, and everyone hopes for just one of those in their career. In some ways this is the next game from that studio, and in some ways we’ve got a bit of a tougher hill to climb now because expectations have been set with Dead Space. But I’m pretty confident that we’re gonna nail it. Although we try not to get too focussed on what’s going to happen when it comes out because there’s a long time between now and then, so we just obviously want it to be really good. We’re very, very aware that people pay a lot of money for these games and that expectations are high, as they should be. So we’re gonna try to knock it outta the park.

As Level-5's PS3 exclusive White Knight Chronicles makes a sturdy, if inconsequential effect on the Japanese software charts, I started wondering about what happened to Level-5's PSP tactical RPG, Jeanne D'Arc, in the UK. I picked it up at an import shop, but didn't realise at the time that it never found its way to these shores. This is rather unfortunate. The game generated a positive reception from critics and is visually among the best on the console, but Sony Europe opted out of releasing it in the UK. In all fairness, it would've made little to no difference on the UK charts, but still, on a console that is genuinely starved for decent software, even having on the shelves would do something to boost its reputation.

Despite the camp overtones of this screenshot, I maintain that Crisis Core was my most entertaining gaming experience of the year. 2008 has been a particularly kind year to the PS3, with Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Fallout 3 and (oh, go on then) Resistance 2 all choking up the multiformat charts while garnering solid levels of critical acclaim. Patapon 2 and LocoRoco 2. While I've known about the latter for some time, the former announcement came as a complete surprise to me. Neither of the first games sold a hugely profitable amount for Sony's handheld, in spite of their critical acclaim and enthusiastic fanbases. Outside of commercial appeal, then, I don't see why Sony commissioned a sequel. Was fan response really that strong towards the two games, or is this Sony's act of desperation in the midst of a PSP software crisis? After all, ...
