So, I played about four hours of Modern Warfare 2's single player campaign last night and loved nearly every minute of it. Especially the White House level – awesome. Oh, and that bit where you're riding on the side of a chopper and land in the gulag – brill.
But anyway, I was having so much fun that I didn't notice that not a single Trophy had popped up during my session. At first I figured that this was because I ...
It’s that time again. A time in videogames that comes along once in a while when someone goes and shows the whole gaming world how to do it.
Naughty Dog has surpassed our expectations, itself and every other developer who has ever released a game with narrative, action and exploration in it with the release of Uncharted 2.
Don’t get me wrong – Naughty Dog hasn’t invented (or even reinvented) the wheel with Uncharted 2, it ...
Who ever wins this battle, wins the console war! Or something.
I've always wondered what would happen if the next-gen console war was literally a war. Like Microsoft actually, genuinely declared war on Sony and made all the guns and planes and tanks and stuff and there would be real fighting and death and so on. Sony would have to defend itself, of course, and, like its bitter rival, would have to switch from making games consoles to guns. Wouldn't it be a lovely war!
Microsoft is first to the battlefield but encounters all kinds of problems with its rushed military hardware. ...
Blimey, if this isn't the best issue of Play we've had this year, then I'll eat my dusty Sixaxis. Of course, it's only the best if you like PlayStation games, which we're going to assume you do because you're reading the Play blog.
BUT ANYWAY.
Inside this bumper issue you're going to find out all the latest on some superb new PS3-exclusives including Gran Turismo 5, The Last Guardian, God Of War III, Final Fantasy XIV and Uncharted 2 as well as a ...
Okay, it's no secret that Sony has been working on the PlayStation 4 for a good two years now and rumours abound that Sony will bring forward its launch to 2011/2012 to directly take on Microsoft's proposed launch of its next Xbox. All this talk of will it, won't it? or 'will PlayStation 3 be Sony's last PlayStation?' are largely irrelevant. It's happening, the real question is: what form will the console take?
What follows is a list of possible functions ...
I'm not going to go into reasons why, but I made a LocoRoco cake a couple of days ago and I thought you might like the recipe. It's based on a recipe for a dense, fudgey chocolate cake and then decorated with delicious marzipan and coloured icing for the eyes and mouth. This makes it look a bit like a LocoRoco. And I emphasize the words 'a bit'.
Ingredients
For the cake
200g good quality dark chocolate (around 70% cocoa solids), 200g unsalted butter, 85g self raising flour, 85g plain flour, 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 200g muscovado sugar, 200g golden caster sugar, 3 medium eggs, 75ml buttermilk
Now that I've had chance to digest what happened at this year's E3, I thought I'd share my thoughts and feelings about what is (once more) the games industry's biggest and bestest games conference. Let's start with the games.
The Last Guardian was unveiled officially at Sony's press conference. It's probably been the games industry's worst-kept secret over the past 18 months or so – anyone even slightly connected with the industry has known of its existence albeit under the moniker of Project Trico. Still, it's great that it's finally out there and we can talk about it openly, and what Sony showed was simply stunning. Fans of Ico and Colossus will no doubt go mental for the trailer, but I think even cynics couldn't help but be blown away by the sheer magnitude of the game world and exquisite art style on show.
The latest issue of Play goes on sale today, priced £4.99. For your pennies (please don't pay with pennies, as it'll annoy the guy at the counter probably) you get some fantastic stuff.
On this month's cover is the exceptional Heavy Rain. If you've missed the news on this, it's the latest game from Quantic Dream and one of Sony's big games this Christmas. I don't want to say too much here, but this game is looking great; a must-read.
We've also got ...
The game on next month’s cover of Play is Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain, a game, more than any else I care to remember, that pushes the definition of ‘game’ to its very limits. It is, essentially, a game that’s a film, a film that you have the power to direct – an ‘interactive movie’ if you will.
It’s a term that I remember being banded around years ago when FMV first became possible because of the advent of CD as a storage media ...
With E3 just around the corner, I thought that it would be a good time to go through what we expect to be at the show, from Sony's perspective. I've arranged this post in a kind of 'hot or not' stylee but replaced 'hot' with 'likely' and 'not' with 'unlikely'. You'll get the idea.
LIKELY
Sony's big games showcased
It almost goes without saying that Sony will ...
By now you've probably read all about these supposedly leaked images from a factory in China that, again, supposedly show images of a new PlayStation 3 model, a model in the Slim & Lite mould.
I've been studying them for a good while now and I still can't make up my mind. Either they are pics of some cheap pirated-PS3 knock-off, or they are real. I wouldn't be surprised either way.
Thing is, it's really got the office talking. And it would kind of make sense if it were ...
So, I went up to Rockstar last week for a spot of lunch and a chat last week. I also got to see its latest open-world epic, the western-styled Red Dead Redemption. I can report back to you that it looks like it's going to be amazing. Now, I can't really go into specifics here but I thought you might like to hear some of my impressions.
Here goes.
I loved the openness of the game world. It was refreshing, after feeling a little hemmed in by GTA IV's ...

On the cover we've got the long-awaited announcement of Assassin's Creed II – inside you'll find the first screenshots and gameplay details of Ubisoft's brilliant sequel. It's a must-read.
There's plenty more to excited about too with a first look at Modern Warfare 2, previews of Final Fantasy XIII, inFamous and Batman: Arkham Asylum and reviews of Bionic Commando, Rock Band 2 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
We ...
I love gaming events. That is, to say, game releases that are so big that they can be classified as events. It's a select club: a new Halo game, for example, could be classified as an event. Or something with Mario in it – as long as it's part of the lineage of Super Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy – would also count. And, of course, there's the GTA franchise. This, I would argue, stands head and shoulders above even Mario and the Master Chief in ...
All right, all right, yes I am using this forum to plug my new LittleBigPlanet level, entitled 'A Cup Of Tea And A Nice Sit Down', in a weak attempt to get some more plays and (fingers crossed) more hearts. I published it on Saturday and have, to date, had it played a shameful 24 times, which, when you consider how brilliant it is, is a crime.
In it, Sackboy pops round for a cup of tea and a chat and then gets whisked off to the World Of Cake for ...
